High Levels of Vitamin C

People with high levels of vitamin C in their blood have about half the risk of dying when compared to people with low levels - regardless of age.

A study conducted by Cambridge University in England and reported in the Lancet found low plasma levels of vitamin C were directly related to higher mortality from all causes, especially from heart disease. High levels of C were protective even against cancer.

The researchers found eating even one extra serving per day of a fruit or vegetable rich in vitamin C would reduce the daily risk of death by 20 percent. They concluded even modest increases in fruit and vegetable consumption would have a major impact in preventing disease.
