Vacation or Work? A Little Bit of Both!

Following is a post from my awesome wife, Laura, author of the blog, JunkFoodaholic.com.

I haven't touched a computer in four days! I think it's a personal record. I'm on vacation! YEA!!! :) We arrived at Cathy's (my mother-in-law) house on Saturday morning at 10:40 am ET. We drove through the night, from Arkansas to North Carolina... it took us 16 hours.

My husband, Paul, and I planned for part of our vacation to be set aside to help Cathy get her garage and attic cleaned out. She's trying to sell her house so she can downsize. Having lived in her house for over thirty years, she has a lot of stuff to organize.

My father-in-law, Paul Sr., passed away last year. For twenty-five years, he ran a construction and remodeling business out of his garage. It was his domain and it was filled with all kinds of tools, equipment and other stuff.

We're Vacationing in North Carolina!

Since we've been married, every summer my husband, Paul, and I make the trek to eastern North Carolina - or as he likes to call it, "God's Country".

We always have a good visit with his family and friends who live in Rocky Mount. But one of the main reasons we like to go during the summer is so we can go to Atlantic Beach.

Paul and I both love the smells, sights and sounds of the beach. Our son, Dylan, loves it too, of course. And now that we have a baby, Brady, it makes it that much more fun.

We took Brady to the beach last summer, when he was 4 months old. Now that he's 16 months old, it'll be fun watching him toddle around playing in the sand and the ocean.

We will be leaving Conway, AR, Friday evening and will arrive in Rocky Mount, NC, Saturday morning. When we drive at night, we can make the trip in 14½ hours. But when we drive during …

Warning: May Cause Death

In the kitchen, we have a small television on top of the fridge. The other day I was in there when a pharmaceutical commercial aired. I didn't hear the whole thing and don't know what drug was being advertised.

But at the end, when the mandatory side-effects were being disclosed, this certainly caught my attention:

"May cause death."
I thought to myself, "With a side-effect like that, why even bother?"

And have you noticed they no longer say, "Ask your doctor." Instead you hear, "Get it from your provider."

Have many physicians been reduced to the mere role of drug dispenser? And are hospitals and clinics simply storefronts?

What Everybody Ought To Know About Watching TV

Many of the things on this list can also apply to the Internet.

As for me, I do not watch much television. I do like my college football, however, and can park it in front of the tube all day on Saturdays if I'm not careful.

But now that we have a 16 month old baby, Brady, I don't see myself watching too many games this fall.

A Simple Cure For Daytime Fatigue

Seventy-five percent of Americans are chronically dehydrated. This means you most likely need more water in your diet.

Dehydration is often the main trigger of daytime fatigue and can cause symptoms such as nausea, stomach aches, and confusion. Drinking at least eight servings (8 oz.) of water each day will increase your energy and help you metabolize fat easier. Toddlers should drink two to three ounces of water per hour and older children should drink four to six ounces per hour.

What's In Your Strawberry Milkshake?

In most fast food restaurant chains, there are two ingredients that are notably absent from the making of a strawberry milkshake: Milk and Strawberries!

During the past two decades, the flavor industry's role in food production has become so influential, many children now like man-made flavors more than the real thing.

The average fast food shake now has 59 ingredients, most of which are unpronounceable and found in the "artificial strawberry flavoring."

That milkshake probably has the following:

During World War II, those Jews who were not immediately exterminated by Hitler's brutal henchmen were herded into disease infested concentration camps. In Hungary, the Nazis set up a camp factory where prisoners were forced to distill tons of human waste and garbage into alcohol to be used as a fuel additive.

Top 10 Reasons to Avoid Processed Foods

1. They're dead. Much of the goodness is cooked or processed out of our foods. We do not benefit from the enzymes and nutrients the foods normally contain. Dead foods equals dead cells.

2. Lose money. Although fruits and vegetables often appear to be expensive, they are often less expensive than processed foods. Fresh broccoli can cost $0.78/lb, while frozen broccoli can cost $1.19/lb.

3. Wrong market. When you spend money on processed foods, you encourage growth in this market. Spending your money on fruits and vegetables, preferably organic, encourages others to enter this market.

4. Fortified with synthetics. To make up for the loss of nutrients during processing, synthetic vitamins and minerals are added. Although helpful, these synthetics are not as healthy as their natural counterparts.

Are Multivitamins an Insurance Policy for Good Health?

According to the Harvard School of Public Health, trying to follow all the studies on vitamins and health can make your head swirl. But, when it's all boiled down, it's actually pretty simple: A daily multivitamin is a great way to make sure you're getting all the nutrients you need to be healthy.

The folic acid in most multivitamins helps prevent neural tube defects in newborns. It may lower the risk of heart disease, colon cancer, and breast cancer. Vitamin D from a multivitamin or single supplement can lower the risk of colon and possibly many other cancers.

Of course, there can be too much of a good thing. It's important not to go overboard with vitamins. While a multivitamin can help fill some of the gaps in a less than optimal diet, too much can be harmful. In general, stick close to standard recommended doses. Most of all, make sure your multivitamin is made from food.

According to the folks at Harvard, here are a few quick tips to getting the right vitamins.

1. Eat a healthy diet. A multivitamin provides some insurance against deficiencies. However, a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and healthy oils, and low in red meat and unhealthy fats is recommended. Let the Healthy Eating Pyramid be your guide.

2. Choose a daily multivitamin. A daily multivitamin is an inexpensive nutrition insurance policy. Try to take one every day.

3. Think about D. In addition to its bone health benefits, there's growing evidence that getting some extra vitamin D can help lower the risk of colon and breast cancer. Aim for getting 1,000 to 2,000 IU of vitamin D per day. This likely will require a daily multivitamin.

The Things My Grandfather Taught Me

When I was in college, my grandfather was diagnosed with lung cancer. A lifelong smoker, almost every memory includes seeing him in business attire, cigarette in hand.

As a young child, his father died and eventually his mother remarried. Her new husband was hard on young Tom, physically beating him more than once. So at the ripe ol' age of eleven, my grandfather decided to leave his Missouri home, never to return.

How To Lower Your Risk For These Two Cancers

Most people think cancer just happens. Yet studies show that many cancers are environmentally caused and can be largely avoided.

For example, a chemical added to processed meat products is responsible for a 6700% increased risk in pancreatic cancer, according to research at the University of Hawaii.
