To Survive Cancer, Do We Need To Try To Live With It?

When I was in college, my grandfather died of cancer.

A few years later, a friend of mine died of leukemia when he was only thirty-two years old, leaving behind a wife who was eight months pregnant.

Then my father died of cancer after being on oxygen for eight years.

So on a regular basis, I try to read books and articles about the subject of cancer. One current article, "To Survive Cancer, Live With It", is about a new generation of cancer researchers, who look at the disease in a different way, as well as a different approach in treating it.

According to Robert Gatenby, a mathematical oncologist at the Moffitt Cancer Center,
"...trying to wipe cancer out altogether actually makes it stronger by helping drug-resistant cells flourish. Got a Craving? I Bet You Can't Eat Just One!

Remember the old Frito-Lay commercial, "Bet You Can't Eat Just One!"?

Turns out, it's true.

One study found just a single taste of a treat triggered more excess twenty-five minutes later.

The study found that once people had a taste of an indulgence, such as chocolate, it created a desire for more of the same.

One of the best ways to combat these cravings is to eat three nutritious meals a day. Also, when you skip meals, it makes you more prone to crave something sweet or salty.

How Many Steps a Day to Maintain Your Weight?

It's spring time, the weather is nice and more people are getting outside. For exercise, one of the things my wife and I like to do is walk.

Researchers at Science Dailyrecently investigated how many steps per day people should walk in order to maintain their weight. They found that women and men between the ages of 18-40 require an average of 12,000 steps a day for weight control.

One mile is equal to 2,000 steps. So 12,000 steps is approximately six miles.

Everyone is different, so focusing all of your efforts on this target goal may not make sense for everyone. Besides, some people prefer other forms of exercise such as riding bicycles, strength training or swimming. The key is to pick some form of exercise and try do it every day.

I wonder if running around behind our two year-old son also counts as exercise?

With over sixty million sales consultants worldwide, contributing over $114 billion in sales, it goes without saying that direct sales certainly plays a large role in the economic sector.

In the United States alone, there are 16.1 million people involved in direct sales. According to the Direct Selling Association census, 81.8% of direct sales reps in the U.S. are female and the remaining 18.2% are male.

The annual turnover rate is 56% in direct sales. In comparison, the turnover rate is 53% for retail sales.

Nonetheless, 82% of those involved in direct seller have been with their company for more than a year. Those who drop out tend to do so because they have achieved their goal.

What Does Calcium Do For You?

About ninety-nine percent of your calcium resides in your bones and teeth. The remaining one percent circulates in your blood and carries out the critical function of regulating muscle contraction, heart contraction and nerve function.

Calcium gives you strong bones and prevents osteoporosis. It even lowers blood pressure and can decrease your risk of colon cancer.

Is The Swine Flu Hysteria Over The Top?

It's amazing the media hype this swine flu has received. It's made headlines in every major newspaper and magazine. The Center for Disease Control seemingly has a new press release every hour. Television and radio talking heads have told us to brace for the worst. President Obama has asked for 1.5 billion dollars to fight it. Schools have been closed, trips postponed, pigs slaughtered and nations blamed. It's crazy.

At this point, however, I'm not buying the hype. It seems to me Swine Flu H1N1 is not any different from every other strain of flu we experience every year. In fact, there are signs that the worst of the swine flu outbreak is already behind us.

There are viruses, germs and bacteria all around us. So why are we not sick all the time? And every winter, when millions of people get the flu, how come every one who contracts the flu virus doesn't die?

Ready... Set... Toad!

Our home is located in an older, established neighborhood with lots of big trees and green grass. We love how we're centrally located, with a nice park close by as well as several schools within close walking distance, including Conway High School and the University of Central Arkansas.

One of the neater things about where we live, however, is the Toad Suck Run race goes right by our house! A part of the Toad Suck Daze festival, it's a 5K and 10K race hosted by the Conway Running Club, with runners coming from all over the state to participate.

I get up early on Saturday morning and stand in the front lawn, waving and talking to the runners as they go by. The interaction is neat, with the racers smiling and saying, "Come join us!" I'll laugh and say, "Maybe next year!" When it's all over, I'll come back inside and get ready to head downtown, for the sights and sounds of Toad Suck Daze.

They Are Stuck on a Truck!

Want a free truck?

That's what twenty-five contestants are after, as they participate in the annual 'Stuck on a Truck' competition at the Toad Suck Daze festival.

Beginning at noon on Thursday, these hopeful truck winners place their hands on a new Ford F-150.

The rules are simple: The last one awake and holding one hand on the truck wins it.

During the competition, contestants are given a five minute break each hour. Once every six hours, contestants are given a fifteen minute break.

Except during permitted breaks, one hand must remain on the vehicle at all times. A contestant may not sit, lie, lean, kneel, squat, stand against or otherwise use the vehicle to support his or her body.

In 2007, the competition almost reached the 99 hour mark! With just two people remaining, one of them finally walked away in a state of sleep deprived delirium.
