How Many Servings A Day Do Your Kids Need?

Children two to six years old as well as women who are not very active - 5 servings: 2 fruits, 3 vegetables

Older children, teen girls and men who are not very active - 7 servings: 3 fruits, 4 vegetables

Teen boys and active men and women - 9 servings: 4 fruits, 5 vegetables

Kids who get enough nutrition every day decrease their risk for things like ear aches, allergies, colds and the flu. (For adults, it's heart disease, cancer and stroke.) They also maintain memory function, eyesight, strong bones and more.

Low-Carb verses Low Fat

1. March 7, 2007 - The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published an article showing that, at twelve months, women assigned to the Atkins (low-carbohydrate) diet lost more weight and experienced more favorable metabolic effects than did women assigned to follow the LEARN, Ornish or Zone diets.

2. July 17, 2008 - The New England Journal of Medicine published an article describing a two-year study of men and women in Israel. The study showed that, compared with the low-fat diet, the low-carbohydrate diet produced greater weight loss and had more favorable effects on lipids. The authors concluded that low-carbohydrate diets may be an effective alternative to low-fat diets.

Natural Healing

What's Wrong With "Natural" Supplements?

Natural is not the same as whole-food based.

There is no FDA definition of "natural". So all kinds of products can be labeled "natural" and still be useless or even harmful for consumers. What's worse, the FDA will leave it undefined for the time being. This is a problem for everyone using the term to label their products:

Is Losing Weight Unhealthy For You?

We all know there are unhealthy ways to lose weight. But according to this article, losing weight itself may be unhealthy for you. Seriously.
An international team of scientists found that toxic pollutants, which are stored in fat, release themselves into the bloodstream when fat dissipates. The chemicals, called persistent organic pollutants, are linked to degenerative diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes. - Reuters Health The research team followed 1,099 American participants, tested their blood, and found concentrations of seven potentially harmful pollutants.
Once released into the bloodstream, these pollutants are able to reach vital organs, said the researchers. While I agree it's unhealthy to lose weight the wrong way, the benefits of weight loss, especially when done the right way, far outweigh any potential harm.

Are Carbohydrates Necessary for Good Health?

In their book, Protein Power, Drs. Michael and Mary Dan Eades write, "The actual amount of carbohydrates required by humans for health is zero."

In other words, there is no such thing as a necessary carbohydrate for good health.

They go on to say that every cell in the human body has the ability to create its own sugar or energy. Therefore, carbohydrates, especially in the quantities generally consumed today, serves only to damage the internal environment of the human body.
