Study: Whole Milk Means Slimmer Kids

According to a study published in JAMA Pediatrics, kids given whole milk are less likely to gain weight.

"There's never been such a strong evidence base for these recommendations," says Dr. David S. Ludwig, an endocrinologist at Boston Children's Hospital.

"We're not arguing that milk should be eliminated from the diet, but that a broader range of recommendations might be more appropriate."

It seems when children drink skim, they're less satisfied and therefore more likely to eat snacks, particularly the carbs that cause blood-sugar levels to spike, which leads to more hunger, more snacking and more weight gain.

Said Dr. Ludwig, "We just don't see any benefit for focusing on reducing fat."

And neither should you.

According to a new study from Oxford University, Omega 3 is linked to cognition and behavior in schoolchildren with below average reading ability.

This large study evaluated healthy, but underperforming children, finding blood serum levels to be low in LC 0-3 or Omega 3.

Does High Fat and Meat Lower Prostate Cancer Risk?

A study in the International Journal of Cancer showed the consumption of high saturated fat and meat can lower the risk of prostate cancer.

This study investigated the relationship between diet and prostate cancer. It included 25,708 men, aged 16-56 years, who were followed for up to fifteen years.

The researchers found that men who consumed the most saturated fat had a 30% lower risk of prostate cancer, compared to men who consumed the least saturated fat.

It also found men who consumed the most meat had a 60% reduced risk of prostate cancer, compared to men who consumed the least meat.

The researchers also discovered that men who drank whole milk had a 120% reduced risk of prostate cancer, compared to men who drank skimmed milk.

Finally, men who consumed the most polyunsaturated fat had a 40% increased risk of prostate cancer, compared to men who consumed the least polyunsaturated fat.

The Importance of Green Foods

One reason greens are important is because they are rich in magnesium.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Likely Not Associated With Prostate Cancer

A study has been widely reported in the media, stating that higher levels of omega-3 fatty acid may increase the risk of prostate cancer.

Lipid and omega-3 fat expert, Dr. William Harris, posted this concise critique of the study, exposing some fundamental problems:

"First, the reported EPA+DHA level in the plasma phospholipids in this study was 3.62% in the no-cancer control group, 3.66% in the total cancer group, 3.67% in the low grade cancer group, and 3.74% in the high-grade group. These differences between cases and controls are very small and would have no meaning clinically as they are within the normal variation. Based on experiments in our lab, the lowest quartile would correspond to an HS-Omega-3 Index of 4.77%). These values are obviously low, and virtually none of the subjects was in “danger” of having an HS-Omega-3 Index of >8%.
