Are Whey and Soy Powders Healthy?

Question: "I have 15 year old stepson who is a super football player. He uses a whey supplement. He is fantastic kid and really into good health habits.

I appreciate so much the chart and info you sent on the dangers of soy and whey. Do you have any info or testimonials from male athletes (particularly football or basketball players) that would be helpful in trying to persuade him? He is using Muscle Milk Gainer during football season because he can't afford to lose the weight from the intense workouts and the school does not let them eat during school hours other than lunch. It has 32g whey protein, 109 carbs and 9 grams of fat, 650 calories (he needs the calories, he simply can't get enough calories during the day!)

So is it safe to take the ProPeas in a quantity that will equal that same amount of protein and will he get the calories, carbs, fat, etc??"

Answer: Here's the ingredient list for Muscle Milk:

INGREDIENTS: WATER, CALCIUM SODIUM CASEINATE, MILK PROTEIN ISOLATE, MALTODEXTRIN, SUNFLOWER OIL, CANOLA OIL, LESS THAN 1% Of: CRYSTALLINE FRUCTOSE, MEDIUM CHAIN TRIGLYCERIDES, DIPOTASSIUM PHOSPHATE, CELLULOSE GUM AND GEL, WHEY PROTEIN CONCENTRATE, MAGNESIUM PHOSPHATE, SOY LECITHIN, NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS,POTASSIUM CHLORIDE, SODIUM HEXAMETAPHOSPHATE, CARRAGEENAN, TRICALCIUM PHOSPHATE, ACESULFAME POTASSIUM, POTASSIUM CITRATE, ASCORBIC ACID, FERRIC PYROPHOSPHATE, SODIUM PHOSPHATE, DICALCIUM PHOSPHATE, SUCRALOSE, DL-ALPHA TOCOPHERYL ACETATE, D-CALCIUM PANTOTHENATE, NIACINAMIDE, ZINC OXIDE, COPPER GLUCONATE, VITAMIN A PALMITATE, PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE, THIAMINE MONONITRATE, RIBOFLAVIN, CHROMIUM CHLORIDE, FOLIC ACID, BIOTIN, POTASSIUM IODIDE,CHOLECALCIFEROL, CYANOCOBALAMIN.

Muscle Milk has quite the combination of chemicals.

Here's the ingredients for ProPeas® and almond milk: Pea protein, natural vanilla flavor, guar gum, filtered water, almonds, evaporated cane juice, calcium carbonate, natural vanilla flavor and other natural flavors, sea salt, potassium citrate, carrageenan, sunflower lecithin, vitamin a palmitate, vitamin D2, D-alpha tocopherol (natural vitamin E).

If your stepson were to mix four scoops of ProPeas® with twenty-four ounces of almond milk, he would get fifty-one grams of protein, fifty-eight grams of carbs, 13.5 grams of fat and 560 calories.

For added micronutrients and a change of flavor, he may consider adding one teaspoon of CoCoa LeafGreens™. This equates to about a 59% increase in protein intake.

If he is over one hundred and sixty pounds and exercising as heavily as you describe, this is not an excessive amount of protein. Most athletes try to consume a minimum of one hundred grams of protein daily and some up to one gram of protein per pound of body weight. Please let me know if you need any additional information.
