Why We Get Fat

From the author of Good Calories, Bad Calories and Why We Get Fat, Gary Taubes explains why obesity is not caused by eating too much and exercising too little, but rather, by the effect of carbohydrates and their impact on the hormones and enzymes that regulate fat tissue.

For Head Colds and Sinus Infections

One way to fight head colds and sinus infections, without using antibiotics, is to rinse your sinuses.
Some people call it a nasal saline irrigation treatment. You can do this by rinsing them once or twice a day, as soon as you feel an infection.

Mix 1/2 teaspoon of salt with 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda, along with two cups warm water. Flush each nostril with one cup of the solution. You can also make an extra quantity for additional flushes, as needed.

You can buy a sinus rinse kit at any local drug store.

It can take a few days to a week of flushing to get rid of all the gunk, but it gets better every day.

Note: One brand that is highly recommended is the Neilmed brand.

Another idea is to use oil of oregano (Super Strength Oil of Oregano P73, taken with OregaMax by North America Herb and Spice Company).

Some say simply sniffing it will open your sinus cavities.

The Difference Between Mag-nificence™ and Epson Salt?

Question: What is the difference between epsom salt and Mag-nificence™?

Answer: Epson salt is magnesium sulfate, while Mag-nificence™ crystals is magnesium chloride.

Magnesium sulfate is not stored by the body. On the other hand, magnesium chloride is is conserved by your body.

The salts from AIM are also more bioavailable, meaning it is better used by your body.

Added Sugar Linked to High Blood Pressure

According to a new study published in Open Heart, added sugar contributes to heart disease more than salt.

It seems it is the carbs and added sugars, found in processed foods, contribute to heart disease, more so than salt.

"Ingesting one 24-ounce soft drink has been shown to cause an average maximum increase in blood pressure of 15/9 mm Hg and heart rate of 9 bpm. Those who consume 25% or more calories from added sugar have an almost threefold increased risk of death due to cardiovascular disease, according to the research." - Medical News Today

The biggest offender? High fructose corn syrup.

Most natural sugars have a balance of fructose and glucose. They are beneficial in fruits and vegetables. However, high fructose corn syrup is not balanced, which can lead to acidic blood, damaging the lining of the veins.

Source: C. Tissa Kappagoda, MD, PhD, professor of cardiovascular medicine,University of California, Davis.

Grape seed extract lowers blood pressure. In a new study, 24 patients with metabolic syndrome (a cluster of heart disease risk factors, including high blood pressure, excess abdominal weight and elevated blood sugar) took a 150 or 300 milligram (mg) capsule of grape seed extract or a placebo daily for one month.

Result? Those who took either dose of the extract experienced an average drop in systolic pressure (top number) of 12 millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and 8 mmHg in diastolic pressure (bottom number).

Theory: Grape seed extract boosts the production of nitric oxide, a heart-protective enzyme.

Product: Two gel capsules of Proancynol® 2000 contains 50 mg of grape seed extract.
